If you do a search on “writing program virtual assistant manuscript submission” you’ll get plenty of sites to consider. I’d look for one where you can hire someone for a few hours—say three—a week to do manuscript submissions for you. It’s a pretty specialized task, but if you can connect with a student in a writing program, you’ll really be doing both of you a favor! The question is whether you want someone to merely handle submissions or someone to research the market and do submissions. The latter will be more expensive, I’m sure. So I guess the first step is to figure out exactly what kind of support you want, write up a concise description of the job, then do your search.

A very useful idea for those who have the resources. I, for one, hate the manuscript submission process, so….

I just did a quick search. You’re right about Submittable: you can search on Novella but it’s not very productive. Poets & Writers is a better source. Here are a few links you might look into:

    On Submittable now:

    University of Miami Press
    Novella Prize 2022—deadline August 31
    https://www.orgs.miamioh.edu/mupress/novella/index.html

    New Letters
Novella Contest—No deadline listed [max. 30,000 words]
    https://newlettersmagazine.submittable.com/submit/197407/novella-submission-non-subscriber

Many pages of small press novella publishers at Poets & Writers:

I’ll keep thinking about it, too! It could be that you’ll want to try going after an agent.

    More to come!

Where have you tried, Sally? Maybe I can steer to some other places….

I vacillate between hating the screen and needing the screen. Either way, you’re right. Reminders to enter the mental independence of filling the blank page are always welcome.

How’s your own work coming, Nikita?

They really can be helpful. How’s your writing coming, amiga?

Thanks, Kirk! Hey, I was excited to see that you submitted The Coffiner of Escondido for publication. I kept dithering with the ms. you sent me, trying and failing to carve out enough free time to do it justice. Then I had surgery, the pandemic hit, my wife had a stroke–and I’ve never really caught up with anything! (The notebook still sits beside my chair, balefully glaring at me every time I walk by.) Have you gotten a response? I sure wish you luck with it, amigo.

After a long, rather painful period of intense revision and editing, my new book finally went to the printer! The new release date is September 1. You can see the publisher listing here: https://nyq.org/books/title/under-sleeps-new-moon

Terrific, Nikita! I definitely will pass this along.

I give up. Which movie was it?

    Take good care!

Hey, all! I have to apologize for not being engaged for so long. I’ve been stricken with pandemic fatigue—a fogginess-and-lassitude combo that’s been pretty darn frustrating. Anyway, I came across a contest that looks like it might actually be useful. (You may know that I hate contests on principle: art is not a competition!) It’s not just winner-take-all, and it may help to get your work in front of interested agents. Here’s the link:

Again, I can’t personally vouch for this one, but it does sound promising.

Congratulations, Nikita! I ordered up a copy—a good-looking publication—and will send a notice of it for the program newsletter. Exciting!

That’s actually good news, Joe. Keep sending to opia! Persistence is the best way to build relationships with editors, which over the long haul is key.

By the way, you may want to give Able Muse a try. They love poetry in traditional forms, but they don’t start reading again until May 1. See https://www.ablemusepress.com/submit

Happy holidays, amigo, and keep on keepin’ on!

That is intriguing, Sally. If you can find a partner, I’ll set up an exchange thread for you….
