ParticipantA new short story is out!!!
This is hands down the story I’m proudest of :). It got accepted a few months back and is now finally seeing the light of day~~
Here it is, sweet friends. I know it can be pretty quiet on here, but I really value each and every one of ya and keep writing in the hopes that we all make it bustle!

ParticipantJust saw this!! I had a literary agent reach out to me earlier this year (!!!!!!!) who requested to read my manuscript. I’m giving her pages in the next month and a half or so and will absolutely be combing through this for advice beforehand.

ParticipantI didn’t know the vowel rule! I unfortunately used to have to teach adjective order as an EFL/ESL teacher and let me tell ya…we may have it innately memorized, but standing in front of a bunch of students trying to explain why is among my greatest professional nightmares!!!

ParticipantWhat’s the word count on your novella? I can look on Duotrope and do a screenshot of the ones that pop up :). Off the top of my head, I know Pulp Magazine does longer works!
nikita
ParticipantWay too late to this reply, but I just saw it! Amadeus was the movie 🙂
nikita
ParticipantI know I’m not someone who can ~do it for you~, but I’ve upped my game the past few months in submissions and would love to send you a list or chat it out if ya want! I routinely dig around on Duotrope and have two short stories in ten spots each (!) for consideration, which is a personal record. Is it the looking or the querying that’s hitching you up?
nikita
ParticipantOooh, I can’t wait to dig into this. I love a good talk. It’s so true about reading as a writer; I think that even a good old trashy beach read teaches us about what compels us. Thank you for being so good at finding resources, like Sally says!
nikita
ParticipantThank you, Joe! I feel really excited about it and definitely love their covers each and every time :).
I just watched the video from your reading; I loved the little tweak you gave to the lines at the end versus the written version – what a pleasure to see you read! I wish I’d been able to see it live. That’s also great news about the monthly bestseller list – what a feat!
I’ve thought about it with France. I was in Toulouse, which is so underappreciated in travel blogs and whatnot, despite being an absolutely incredible city that Rhody and I are planning on moving to next year. I’ll mull over some ideas on what to write! There’s definitely a trove to choose from.

ParticipantY’ALL.
It has been months! I got distracted by life (like I’m sure we all did). My husbo and I went to the south of France for a month, and the whole time, I kept thinking I wanted to reach out and update everyone on life – including some big news! My short story “Black Hole Elvis” got accepted at “Bourbon Penn,” a magazine that’s been a big goal pub for me since I discovered it in 2017. It feels so exciting to have accomplished something that feels like a big milestone; it’s not a ~~big~~ pub, but it’s one I admire and read regularly, which means a lot to me. It’ll be out in the world come March, and I can’t wait to share it with all y’all :). It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever written. I’m also almost finished with another short story I’m gonna throw out to the universe come December, so cross yr fingies for me!
Anyone else got some news? I wanna hear it all!
Miss y’all; hope the autumn has been kind.

ParticipantOhh, I love these exercises. I’ve been doing this thing where I have my phone/the internet/all connection to service or wifi off for a full 24 hours, and it’s been absolutely wonderful. It’s so nice to be totally present in a way that I’ve honestly never been. I think any of us who grew up in the 80s or 90s were raised in front of a screen (even if we remember the Pre-Internet Times). It’s always creatively enriching to step away!
nikita
ParticipantKirk! That’s so exciting that you’re in the submission stage for a dang NOVEL. Please keep us posted. What’s it about?
nikita
ParticipantCongrats, Joe! I know you’ve mentioned how arduous this one’s been. I’m glad you’ve gotten to release it into the wild. I can’t wait to order it in September!
nikita
ParticipantHey, y’all!
I hope the writing world has been treating you kindly. I know I’ve been going at it like Mozart at the end of “Amadeus,” all wild and half-sick and unable to fathom stepping away (can you tell what movie I watched this week?).
ANYWAY, someone sent me this fantastic, organized list of places to publish. They’ve ranked the spots by tiers and given you some vital info about what they publish. It’s specifically for fiction, but I thought it was a fantastic little thing regardless.
Joe H., it may even be something to share with students! I don’t know; just thinking “out loud.”
Hope everyone’s having a fantastic day/week/month :).
nikita
ParticipantGreat! See y’all then!
nikita
ParticipantThank you! Your feedback was such a big part of the piece; I’m so happy to see it really finished 🙂
